Cory Appell

Cory
In love with his guitar more than he's ever been with a girl, recent high-school graduate Cory insisted he could strike out on his own immediately. Now, that guitar may be the only thing standing between him and bankruptcy.

Story

Last summer, Cory went shopping for all the dorm essentials with his parents and younger sister, buying all sorts of things that would be helpful in a college residence hall. Then, in August, he packed up his things into his car and drove off to UBrite... or so his family thought. In fact, Cory's intent had always been to go somewhere else and start a new life. The reason for this can be traced to an incident in high school where he wanted to ask his classmate from calculus— a boy named Nathan— out for coffee at the Blue Moon. He figured he could trust his best friend to keep it quiet that he was gay, but it was not to be. Rather than keeping it a secret, his "friend" decided to tell every girl in the school. Somehow, Cory managed to avoid getting beaten, but the amount of time he spent painting over the epithets keyed into his car doors and the shame he felt from all the taunts and jeers from not only his classmates but also his teachers, was enough to convince him he didn't want to see any of them again. Whether Nathan would have agreed to his request or not is unknown, but he decided to use the opportunity provided him by graduation and the expectation that he would go on to college as his ticket out. Running away without running away, as it were. Upon arrival in Sunshine Acres, he gave a fraudulent birthdate to the rental agent, stating that he was 21 years old, and then set about furnishing his new place. Without his dad's knowledge, he nicked the camping cot from the garage and hid it under filing crates full of clothes and towels so he would at least have someplace to sleep.

Cutting and running as he did, Cory didn't have the chance to work out how to support himself, so he spends a great deal of his time at the coffee shop downtown, playing the guitar. He knows enough about jazz, soft rock, and metal to entertain the customers, to the point he's made almost §700 in tips; plus, the coffee shop's manager has also hired him for odd jobs here and there. All of this has allowed him to pay 2 months' worth of rent, but it's starvation wages to be sure. The afternoon barista is ready to go on maternity leave and Cory has considered offering to take her place until she can come back to work, but has also considered that he doesn't know the first bean about coffee or how to prepare it. He's already asked for an extension on last month's rent so it may come to that... but he's seen how the afternoon crowd treat the service personnel and he doesn't fancy the verbal abuse. Still, steady employment comes first.

Beyond simply providing for himself, Cory is lonely. If he had carried on to UBrite as he had told his parents, he could very well have met a guy who would pull him close rather than push him away. Still, the thought of going to the same school as at least 15 of the kids who made his life a living hell in high school gave him acid indigestion. Here in Sunshine Acres, nobody knows him, and all he has to do is touch up pictures of UBrite from their Student Life page to make it look like he took them and send them home every so often and his family is none the wiser. After the semester is over, he plans to tell his family that he's moved to Sunshine Acres so he won't have to worry about being caught in a lie anymore. Back to the loneliness, however; after his harrowing experience at school, he's reluctant to tell anyone about himself, to the point he's considering going out with girls, for no other reason than to not be lonely anymore. One of his most heart-rending post-school experiences has been playing an improvised soft rock song at the coffee shop and watching from the corner of his eye a man of his own age using his music as an excuse to propose to his girlfriend. Unfortunately, his sadness translated into the music and just made people like it more... someone put a shrinkwrapped raspberry scone and §10 into his guitar case. Since that incident, he has played exclusively acoustic covers of '80s heavy metal and hasn't even played that chord progression for himself at home. While doing some minor maintenance on a balustrade last month, he noticed a guy came in, ordered a Foggy London (Earl Grey tea with steamed milk, vanilla, and sugar), and played a 15-minute-long piano medley of music from Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda. While Cory doesn't know his name, he's come in a few more times and played various other songs, both recognisable and not. Each time, he orders a Foggy London. Cory has decided that, when he takes over for Danielle, he wants to be the one to serve that guy, just to see if his eyes sparkle as much as his playing does.
