Summary

The first few series (say, from series 1 to 3) feel sort of like the weighted average of The Simpsons and South Park in terms of the type of misadventures the Belchers would get into, I guess you've got to start somewhere. I started watching the show on Hulu in 2017 and happened across a complete set of DVD box-sets at a garage sale in 2021. By "complete", that means series 1-10, at which point they stopped making DVDs. I suspect the set might be bootlegged, though, because the featurettes that Wikipedia talks about are missing and the archival software I backed up my DVD collection with behaved kind of strangely when I asked it to rip them. If it is, it's the most masterful bootleg I've ever seen and I would love to buy the bloke who made it some Chinese takeaway. By some means or another, I also happen to have series 11-13 in my datahoard.

Review

9 out of 10 stars.

I have to admit, I haven't seen a lot of these lately. Beyond the holiday episodes, I really haven't watched the show very much since I saw it for the first time on Hulu. I watch the odd episode here and there, but this is the first time since 2017 that I'm starting from 101 and watching my entire collection front to back. With the exception of some really bad shows in series 2 and 3, most of these still are pretty quality, and not just because the studio isn't letting it die for monetary reasons. Other shows, like The Simpsons and South Park, passed their usefulness years, if not decades, ago and need to end at the close of this series, but the Bob's Burgers writers still have workable ideas, even if they re-use titles with different phrasing occasionally.

The 9/10 rating is due almost entirely to a handful of exceptionally bad shows in the first 3 years: namely, 1.07-"Bed & Breakfast", 2.09-"Beefsquatch", 3.06-"The Deepening", and 3.19-"Family Fracas".
