New LeafGreen: Stuff that's been happening in Kanto lately

I'm probably not doing my gamelog pages properly. I'm just writing reviews and putting up screenshots, I'm not actually keeping a log of any kind there. Oh well, maybe I'll fix that someday, but probably not.

So, Pokémon LeafGreen. I said that, as a personal challenge, I was trying to get all my Pokémon up to Lv.10 or higher before facing Brock in the Pewter Gym, but I decided after Mankey got one-shotted for the 12th time by a wild Spearow, to just take my chances with the levels I had. Helvetica, my Bulbasaur, was already at Lv.12, so was Officina (my Rattata) and Arial (my Pidgey), it was only Kakuna and Mankey (no nickname) that were below 10.

Anyway, I seem to remember the Pewter Gym being a lot harder than it was. Assuming no rebalancing took place when the game was ported to GBA, I think we can attribute the difficulty to the fact I insisted upon using Pikachu against Rock-type Pokémon. For today's lucky 10.000 who aren't familiar with Pokémon: what happens when you try to electrocute a rock? Nothing much. You might pit the rock a little bit, depending on how intense the charge was, but you're not going to be able to do much of anything at all, exposing most types of rocks to electricity. Back in gradeschool, I chipped away at Geodude's health a couple HP at a time, having Pikachu faint, then I replaced it with an horribly underleveled Rattata, and so on. This time, I went into the gym with Bulbasaur, leech-seeded all my opponents, growled at them to lower their defences, then one-shotted them with Vine Whip. I was in and out of there in under 90 seconds. Brock's Onix did the only real damage, squeezing a couple HP out of little Helvetica, but it was over as soon as it began.

Partly because of pre-scripted events, partly out of desire to get all my Pokémon to Lv.20, I then fought all the trainers along Route 3. I can't be sure, but I think all the Lass trainers were flirting with me. I think all the trainers around there were just scared of going into Mt. Moon and were all milling about outside pretending to be brave. Wandering about in the tall grass, I caught a Nidoran and a Jigglypuff. I forgot until just now that I named all my Nidoran evolutions after characters from Bob's Burgers in PokeGo: NidoranM, Nidorino, and Nidoking I named Gene, Ken, and Bob; NidoranF, Nidorina, and Nidoqueen I named Louise, Tina, and Linda. We would probably have hit a bit of a snag in that I didn't want to have all 6 Nidoran evolutions in my personal possession and that my trainer name is already "Tina".

As it happens, I'm actually the 2nd Trainer Tina on Neocities. My mutual follower, virtually-isolated, is the first.

Talking of Jigglypuff, I'm sorry to say I let it get the better of me. It put Helvetica, Officina, and Agnew (Spearow) to sleep before they could get an attack off because I accidentally selected "Growl" instead of "Leech Seed" for my opening attack, giving it an opportunity. Fortunately, I, Tina, was still wide awake, so I defeated it by trapping it in a Poke Ball. Ha. Eat that. So, all that fighting and leveling up they were doing, Helvetica evolved into Ivysaur and Officina learned Hyperfang.

Anyway, I knew shit was about to get real when I noticed the Pokémon Centre built right next to the cave entrance. Some guy in there wanted me to buy a Magikarp off him for P500. I might have accepted if he hadn't called me "Sweetie Pie". It turns out Helvetica is next to useless against Zubats, which is unfortunate considering how many of them are in that cave. Arial and Agnew perform better, but I think the next thing to do is swap out Kakuna and Mankey for Jigglypuff and Pikachu. I'll have to go back to Viridian Forest to level them up, but Pikachu will definitely be an asset at the Cerulean Gym.
