Pictures of Cats and Motorcycles?

On my microblog (formerly called the "Dashboard"), I said that Palestinians on Tumblr are trying to get a dollar from enough people that they can afford a single sack of flour by recounting gruesome tales of seeing their parents and children torn apart by the IOF's American-made explosives while the Fandom account plays the hurdy-gurdy loudly enough to be distracting while they wave pictures of cats and motorcycles in everybody's faces. While I think that on its own paints a pretty descriptive picture of the Kafkaesque state of Tumblr right now, I wanted to explain something.

After Trump got elected the first time, I wanted to write a story about an oppressive government that used brainwashing techniques to ensure not necessarily obedience, but avoidance. It would brainwash people into avoiding news or other information outlets by getting them to associate the news with images of torture, mutilation, and death. Subjects would be put into a CT scanner, then they would be shown the daily news broadcast, but instead of commercial breaks, there would be video of people and animals being tortured, mutilated, and killed. Whenever the subject needed a break, they could press a button at any time to be shown pictures of motorcycles. Just the motorcycle, no other objects or people in the shot. Eventually, nobody watched or read the news anymore and they spent all their time looking at motorcycles, allowing the government to wage open warfare and cause destruction completely sight-unseen.

Well, I decided I couldn't make the story distinct enough from The Illuminatus! Trilogy to not be seen as a copy of it, except with grisly videos instead of fnords and motorcycles instead of adverts. I tried making the motorcycle thing work in various other contexts but nothing stuck so I stopped trying. Now it's just a personal metaphor for governments raising a smokescreen: "showing us motorcycles".

Anyway, that's where that unique phrasing came from. I added cats to the metaphor so it could be better understood at a glance.
