The Far Side desk calendar I got for 2025 doesn't have a phoneasel. It's on a chintzy-ass chipboard back that doesn't even have a phone shelf on it. This is going to be the first year since 2015 that I don't celebrate Phoneasel Day. How am I supposed to know that 2025 happened if I don't have a visual record of it in my phoneasel collection? "But, it's recyclable instead of being made of demon plastic!" Yeah, great, except recycling isn't a real thing, genius. They just chuck it onto a barge and ship it to Taiwan. Also, the evil polluting plastics are fishing nets and ordnance crates. If climate change and pollution truly had grassroots solutions, they wouldn't be problems anymore.

Even though I can't draw at exactly the level I want to, at least I've never felt the need to have generative AI draw something for me. Cos it's not about the content, it's about the process. It's about the feeling of accomplishment when you've drawn a good hand or a nice fold and you sit back and admire it for a few seconds. It's about the pride you feel at the end of it of having drawn something and you leave your sketchbook open to that page or keep your finished work open in GIMP or Image Viewer for a while. As opposed to punching something up on a prompt, waiting for it to empty the Ogallala Aquifer into its heatsink, and then spit out some mediocre content, vivisectioned from bits of stolen art like Frankenstein's monster.

it doesn't happen a lot, but i do occasionally get random NBP Collection font jumpscares on neocities' global activity feed. i discovered fontstruct in about mid-2012 and was just freshly dropped-out of college and between jobs, so I decided to make fonts every couple of days. i never locked any behind paywalls because 1) i couldnt do that on my filehost even if i wanted to and 2) i was so SICK of finding a cool font and discovering i had to pay a whole bunch of money. I guess that was the first pirate hoard i ever assembled was commercial fonts. but, like, i wanted people to use my fonts and i wanted them to have them all for nothing. if you needed a font, you knew where to look. anyway, my old fonts aren't the most popular ever but i still enjoy seeing them in the wilds occasionally, doing what they were meant to do 😊

I'm not sure if this happens on Chromium or not (probably) but Firefox likes to leave file extensions off the end of URLs. Most webpages' file extensions are *.HTML, so like if you wanted to go to my blog page from the address bar, you would only need to type badgraph1csghost.neocities.org/blog. You wouldn't necessarily need to type blog.html, just blog would be adequate. Also, web browsers in general tend to load the Index page of a file directory. So, if you're new to web development, you wouldn't necessarily know that having a page called blog.html and a directory called blog will cause conflicts and will probably lead to a 403 Forbidden error. Why does this happen? By omitting the *.HTML from the address, the browser is now looking for either a file or a folder called "blog", because blog (the file) and blog/ (the folder) look exactly the same to it at this stage. If you have a page and a folder both called "blog", and you try to access blog.html, the browser will shorten the filename automatically. At this point, it will find the folder called blog and attempt to load the Index page. If there isn't one, it will try to load the entire file directory, which trips a security alarm in the server and it returns 403 Forbidden. The way around this problem is, happily, extremely simple: give your files and folders unique names.

I was considering going back to Bluesky, but I read some stuff about recent decisions made by the leadership there and I am no longer considering it. I've also deleted my earlier recommendations that suggested Bluesky was a good Twitter alternative. Eventually, all social networks become facebook or ElonNet, and those that refuse to do that get shut down. Bluesky is becoming Twitter, Tumblr has become Twitter, Cohost shut down because they wouldn't sell out, Neocities? Nekoweb? Which way are they gonna jump? Let's just say I have no hope for the future of the internet.

I follow someone at random on neocities for a couple days because I look at their site and I'm like "yeah, this is a cool person to follow" and then it turns out they're a Harry Potter fan. They come with some shit like "just watched The Deathly Hallows for the 14th time" or "Favourite Games: Hogwarts Legacy" or putting their hogwarts house in their aboutme page. Or, my personal favourite, "I'm a Harry Potter fan, but I don't hate jews or transwomen." Gee, thanks for your overwhelming indifference.

Fun fact. "BOWM.WAV", used in my Failright cover of "Pocket Calculator", is part of a sample series I recorded with the Fairlight App in the car while I was waiting for my mum to get done in a job interview back in 2015. It was hideously hot out, I was parked in the sun, and to get my mind off the fact I was baking to a fine golden brown, I recorded some of the car sounds. Eventually, BOWM, DOWN, AAAH, and GO ended up on my computer and I started using them in Page R style Hydrogen songs a couple years later. I remember it like yesterday, but it was, in fact, 10 years ago this July.

The judge in the case of WPEngine v. Mullenweg granted an injunction for the plaintiff and ordered WordPress to stop its discrimination against WPEngine clients and some other stuff, and Fartomatt's precious little ego deflated so hard he ragequit the WordPress community Slack. Apparently his screenname is now: "gone 💀". I still think WPEngine should have done like those artists did in their lawsuit against Elon Musk and offered to accept the entire WordPress property in lieu of money, but I guess that's water under the bridge now. DNT was never a legally-binding thing, and huge data concerns have admitted to ignoring them. Really, they didn't do jack shit in the first place, but like someone had a dream. I read a thing on HN a few months ago where people were subverting DNT signals by specifically tracking ONLY those IP's that were transmitting one, to what end I don't remember. So yeah. Do Not Track was an experimental thing that never caught on and now Firefox is admitting defeat. Who cares? That's what uBlock Origin is for anyway.

Incidentally, what happened to the Chair Fund? From August to about mid-September on Cohost and Tumblr, I was trying to raise money to buy a new office chair, and I'd made it to, like, half of what I needed. Well, a few things. First, I had to dip into the Chair Fund in order to afford things for rosh ha'shana, because my food stamps gave out at a very bad time. Second, I had to integrate what was left of the fund (about $10) into the Car Repair Fund. So, basically, the Chair Fund never ended, it just transmogrified into the Car Repair Fund, which has itself become the New Car Diagnostic fund. In other words, with the exception of the unavoidable expense at rosh ha'shana (as in, I was standing on the queue with a $40 overage on my food stamps and needed to either pay up or walk out with nothing), I haven't spent any of it. Unfortunately, no part of the Chair Fund is going to fund a new chair at this stage, it all has to go to the car.

The worst part about "the guy" getting arrested is, everyone is gonna eat it up. They're going to spread the propaganda far and wide. This unfortunate schlub went to get an Egg McMuffin and he's gonna spend the rest of the week getting beatdowns by Donnie Wahlberg type police detectives until he does confess just so they'll stop beating him up. He's going to end up having thinkpieces, and news articles, and a Wikipedia profile, and social media posts, and vlogs, and podcasts made about him when all he did was wake up that morning and decide to wear a hoodie because it's cold as tits in that part of the country. How very convenient it must be for the corporate cops to have managed to get a tipoff from a minimum-wage worker at a McDonalds who could never possibly have met a single healthcare insurance denial in their life, to go there and find the guy, at a chance encounter at a place hundreds of miles away from the scene of the crime, with the modified handgun, the engraved bullets, the manifesto, a handwritten confession, and EVERYTHING they could POSSIBLY WANT to send him away for murder. I really hate archiving pages about healthcare CEOs. It's depressing to see how giant these corporations are, how much they own, and how many government contracts they have. I'm convinced the only reason UnitedHealth's community plan is my state's sole medicaid provider is so they can deny coverage and report back to the republican-controlled legislature that fewer people are using their services, so that the republicans can use it as a reason for cutting medicaid back further and further until it wouldn't cover a broken finger. It's becoming harder for me to believe myself when I say I'm saving it for the betterment of humanity. A) who's gonna find it after the nukes go flying? B) who's gonna give a shit anyway?

Everything i said, forget it. cohost hadn't shut down actually, the server was just unreachable for a while, who knows why. i feel less like a failure now that i've totally archived #The Cohost Global Feed (Horny). except of course for an uncountable number of readmores i failed to expand in the first 4,000 or so posts. that was stupid, but it only affected the first 5% of all the total posts. i can't tell you how relieved i felt when i turned the page and saw the "next" button disappear. now this trans-pride haven will live on forever in my datahoard (and the internet archive when I can get there)

The reason i havent released the MIDI original version of "drawing a sexy rabbit" is the drums. i cheated on the mp3 version and used a combination of GZDoom's gm1 soundfont and the fruity fpc drumset i made of the gm1 drums. i always clone snare1 on E2 so that i can play '80s rolls and i forgot to adjust the score when I saved it, so the midi version uses both snare1 and snare2. in other words, you can hear how i cheated (D2 is snare1, E2 should also be snare1 but it's a real channel 10 sequence so it isn't). whatever. this whole esoteric comment was just a long way of saying, i cant be arsed to fix it.

OF COURSE hbomax is purging all CN cartoons except Courage the Cowardly Dog. OF COURSE it is. The board doesn't care about you, doesn't care about your interests, doesn't care WHY you signed up for their stank-ass streaming service in the first place. Put down the porn generator, download the body mods from ModTheSims and just make a girlfriend in The Sims like God intended. You can make her boobs as big as you want, you can make her as thick or as thin as you want, you can dress her up in anything, just for the love of all that is good in the world, stop with the AI crap. Not for any environmental reason, but because I can feel your lack of satisfaction in every knee-jerk "in defence of AI art" post you make. You're getting wound up so tight, you're gonna snap. Hey! Look at that. It took 9100+ posts and about 400 pages, but I finally found a piece of (admittedly very early) AI art on the Horny Global Feed. As you might imagine, it was posted by a cishet white dude with a goatee. Apart from that, all the other stuff on there has been genuinely hand-drawn and live-photographed so far. As far as I can tell, September 2023 was the last time anyone posted AI art to that tag. I'm proud of you guys, resisting the AI invasion to the bitter end!

I feel a bit like a vulture, picking apart cohost's corpse. I don't know why exactly, I just feel like this shouldn't need to be happening. I never did any grieving for cohost, since I was only on there for about 5 months. But some people were there from day 1 in 2022 and had stronger feelings about it than I do. I guess it's expensive to run a social network, and the ideal of remaining independent wasn't compatible with the corporate feudal ideal of data analytics, constant advertising, and AI scraping. You've got to be a trustfunder already in order to have a social network, but by then it's too late for your sense of independence. That's what did Cohost in, ultimately. Anyway, I guess 2022 isn't as bad as, like, 2019 or 2016. I don't have to scrabble quite so desperately to archive the Horny Global Feed. I can probably get it done under the wire.

This is actually a really good lesson about archiving cohost tags. the procedure is
1. visually scan page for audio players and video players during step 2
2. hold the down arrow key to scroll to the page bottom, which lets gifs, sets, and large images load into the cache
3. press crtl+F and search for "read more"; if you find them, expand them.
4. save page with singlefile

so it turns out i had the procedure slightly wrong and i need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page BEFORE i search the page for readmores. Thanks for telling me this after I already have 5000+ posts in 300+ individual pages! I am NOT going all the way back to the beginning of this project and rescanning EVERY GD PAGE. if i missed a readmore, that's on me. it was my own ineptitude and lack of attention to detail that caused me to lose that data.

I sure hope I can get the entire Horny Global Feed archived before the killdate. I don't really have a good reason why i haven't been archiving cohost all this time, but here we are. As far as I know, that tag has chosts in it that date all the way back to the founding of the website, and I'm just one girl with one computer running one instance of SingleFile. The biggest problem is audio players: you have to download the audio separately from the webpage because SingleFile can't grab everything all at once. As far as I can tell, without wasting more time writing a userscript, I have to just visually scan the page for audio players.
